May Ching Lai (Materials Science PhD 2020) is presenting her research at the UK Parliament on Tuesday.

May Ching is appearing at STEM for Britain, presenting a poster on how compression affects battery performance using 3D imaging techniques via advanced electron microscopy.

invited applications from early-career research scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians to exhibit in one of five areas. She was shortlisted from hundreds of applicants to appear in Parliament, presenting to politicians and expert judges.

鈥淚 applied to take part in STEM for BRITAIN to showcase how advanced imaging techniques can help optimise battery design for longer-lasting, high-performance energy storage,鈥 May Ching says.

鈥淲ith the growing demand for electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions, understanding how battery compression influences performance is crucial.

鈥淚 hope to use this opportunity to engage with policymakers and highlight the role of materials science in tackling real-world energy challenges.

鈥淚 am very grateful for the guidance and encouragement of my supervisor, Professor Caterina Ducati, whose support has been instrumental in shaping my research journey and helping me navigate the challenges of my PhD.鈥

Update (March 19):

May Ching won the bronze award for the Chemistry section, and met Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner.
