Research interests
My PhD dissertation was entitled 鈥淭he Ethics of Musicology鈥, and extended an idealist-Marxist theory of culture (after the work of Alain Badiou and Slavoj Zizek) to the analysis of tonal music. Since then my ideological position has shifted, and I am more interested in examining the material conditions of music making: my current research examines music and the body, theories of genre, the influence of the internet on constructions of performance, and the idea of 鈥渃lassical music鈥 itself. I am also interested in the economics of the music industry, and gender and sexuality鈥攅specially queer genders and sexualities. I also maintain an active performing career, appearing internationally as both a soloist and as part of a number of groups including Solomon鈥檚 Knot, Le Concert d鈥橝str茅e, and the Irish Baroque Orchestra.
Teaching Interests
The majority of my teaching centres around the tonal music of the 鈥渃ommon practice period鈥 of Western Classical Music. Over the past decade at Caius I have taught 1st and 2nd year Music Analysis, 2nd year Tonal Composition, 1st year Music History (19th Century), 2nd year Music History (20th and 21st Century), 3rd Year History (the Operas of Mozart and da Ponte), and supervised 2nd and 3rd year dissertations on topics including nationalism and the construction of a national style, 鈥淪ecular鈥 organ music, and the sexualisation of the voice in countertenor singing. I also maintain a private studio as a singing teacher and vocal coach.
