Time to admit to a student prank

Time has uncovered a long-forgotten, near 100-year-old student prank involving the Chapel clock at Gonville & Caius College.

Under cover of darkness while undergraduate students in the 1930s, Geoffrey Hunter Baker (Modern Languages 1934) and an unnamed fellow undergraduate replaced the clock hands with cardboard copies. The two men took a hand each and kept them.

“These worked very well until it rained,” reported Trixie Baker, Geoffrey’s daughter.

Caian Night Climbers in the Long Vacation of 1957

In the long vacation term of 1957 James Anderson (Law 1955) and his friend Neville Gunther (Medicine 1956) scaled the most prominent feature of Gonville & Caius College’s Waterhouse Building under cover of darkness.

There are many other examples of Cambridge night climbing antics, none of which are encouraged due to genuine safety concerns, but this escapade is perhaps less well known.

The Special Air Service has long been admired and shrouded in mystique. BBC drama series, SAS Rogue Heroes, is telling the story of the elite force’s early beginnings, which included Caian Geoffrey Appleyard (Engineering 1935).

Born in Bramley, Leeds in December 1916, John Geoffrey Appleyard matriculated at Gonville & Caius College in October 1935.

To commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War, the stories of some of the 245 Caians who died in the Great War are displayed on our website, in the Chapel, and on the notice boards under the Gate of Virtue in Old Courts. They give a powerful reminder of the fluctuations of the war itself; as well as helping to recall, and honour, their sacrifice.
