Douglas duelling for prize

Caius graduate student Douglas Brion’s efforts to revolutionise 3D printing have seen his start-up, Mattalabs, make the Imperial College Venture Capitalist Challenge Grand Final.

Douglas, an Engineering PhD student, completed his undergraduate degree in Electronic and Information Engineering at Imperial, before beginning his PhD at Caius. His Mattalabs company, launched last November, was one of 25 companies from over 250 entrants to be selected for the two-month Venture Capitalist Challenge (VCC).

Elle Wintle (Law PhD 2025) hopes her story can encourage others to give a second chance by signing up to be stem cell donors.

Elle matriculated at Gonville & Caius College in Lent term, having deferred the place she had secured as a WM Tapp Scholar before a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in April 2024.

Alumna awarded American economics prize

Stefanie Stantcheva (Economics 2004) has been awarded the John Bates Clark Medal by the American Economic Association.

The prize is awarded annually to an American economist under the age of 40 who is judged to have made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge.

Support a History postgraduate studentship

Strengthening Gonville & Caius College’s postgraduate opportunities in History is the aim of a new postgraduate studentship fund which is seeking donations.

Caius is hoping to raise funds to cover tuition fees and maintenance for a Master’s student in History. If £700,000 can be raised for an endowed studentship, it can be awarded in perpetuity.

“We always try to encourage a growth mindset and a sense of identity that extends beyond the academic,” says Rachel Winson, the Gonville & Caius College Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor.

Rachel has worked in the Caius Health Centre alongside Anne Limon Duparcmeur, the College Nurse and Head of Health and Wellbeing, for more than two years. She is a trained Occupational Therapist and a University of Cambridge alumna, having graduated from Clare College, where she read German and Russian.
